London dancehall crew “The Heatwave” release their new single ‘Walk Out Gyal’ featuring Jamaican veteran dancehall deejay Mr Lexx and hotly-tipped vocalist Keida.
“The riddim for Walk Out Gyal actually began life as a remix of Terror Danjah’s ‘Juicy Patty’. We’ve always been into grime and very aware of the influences it’s drawn from Jamaica and dancehall, so with this we took things full circle, using Terror’s distinctive sounds and FX but rearranging everything into a minimal, bass-heavy dancehall pattern.
It clicked right from the start: we played out the instrumental at one of our Hot Wuk raves and had a few people asking us what it was, which is always a good sign! It’s got that foundation ragga sound to it, so doing that singer/MC combination style is a nod to the 90s era, and we knew it would be a great fit for Mr Lexx’s deep voice and Keida’s melodic style”.
Over the past 14 years, The Heatwave’s DJ’s Gabriel and Benjamin D have been taking their London twist on the Jamaican soundsystem formula to dances, including their own roadblock event Hot Wuk, and festivals around the world. ‘Walk Out Gyal’ follows up their first two releases ‘Stopwatch’ ft. K More and ‘London City’ ft. Ding Dong , which were supported by BBC Radio 1’s MistaJam and Toddla T, BBC Radio 1Xtra’s David Rodigan and Seani B and Tim Westwood on CapitaL Xtra. In Jamaica, the tracks got heavy plays from ZJ Chrome, ZJ Sparks and Hottarice
